There is nothing good about an improperly working furnace. The same can be said about a furnace that isn't working at all. When a breakdown happens, it can cause you to panic or stress. Suddenly you are forced to think about your options - and how much those options will cost. Furnace breakdowns tend to happen during the late fall and early winter months. This is because of increased usage following long periods of inactivity. Add that to the freezing cold temperatures outside and pipes can contract and split or your furnace may simply stop working altogether. This is certainly a difficult spot to be in when the weather gets cold. It can leave you and your family members feeling the chill. So, in the event of a problem, should you replace your heating system or delay?
When your furnace stops working, replacement is probably the first thing that comes to mind. Surely that is the only option! The truth is that it is possible to delay a full furnace replacement and installation. Certain repairs can add a little more life to your heating system. This can actually help you save a little cash. How? Delaying the installation process to spring or summer can be more cost effective in certain circumstances. Say your furnace isn't that old and a repair can solve the problem temporarily. You may be better off to have a repair handled immediately and then wait a few months for the full furnace replacement. The cost of installing a new furnace during the winter tends to be more expensive.... so if you can manage to delay the process until springtime, you may be able to save. Speak to your heating and cooling company to see if this is a viable option for your home.
There is something to be said about delaying furnace replacement during the fall and winter months. Since emergency installation can be costly, it is possible that a repair (followed by a full replacement several months down the line) could wind up saving you cash - and keeping your home nice and toasty. This isn't your only option, though. There are many compelling reasons to replace your furnace as soon as a breakdown occurs. Depending on the age of your furnace, a repair may not be enough to get your furnace through the winter season. That means more and more repair costs followed by a furnace replacement later on. This could in turn cost you more money than the initial replacement would have.
By delaying a replacement, you may be able to squeeze a few more months of life out of your unit.... but you may not be able to either. There is no guarantee. So, understand before you make your final decision that delaying a necessary replacement is a gamble. If you would feel more comfortable knowing that your home will stay safe and warm for years to come, then a furnace replacement should be handled right away. It will give you some peace of mind at the very least. For the risk takers out there, delaying might be the best option for you. Think it over.
The questions remains: should you replace or delay? Ultimately, the choice is yours. Before you commit to a decision, consider the age of your furnace and the risk you will be taking. At the end of the day, a repair may add a few months to the life of your furnace.... but it will still need to be replaced. Determine whether you would rather save a bit of cash now or if you care more about the day-to-day reliability of your heating system. Your answer to that question will tell you everything you need to know.
